How to Polkadot

I think the question I get asked most is how I do my dots.  My answer is always the same – it is easier than you may think!

I have put together a little tutorial and a video to show you just how simple it is! Any questions please leave a comment below.

You will need:

  • Chalk paint (or emulsion) for the background
  • Acrylic paint (or emulsion) for the dots
  • Coarse and fine sandpaper
  • Flat paint brush – I use size 4
  • Dotting tool (or the end of a paint brush will do if you don’t have one)
  1. Start by painting the item you want to polka dot.  I have used chalk paint but I also use emulsion tester pots- you get a wider range of colours that way.Screenshot 2019-03-05 at 10.56.19.png
  2. I sand between each coat, first with a coarse sandpaper and then with a fine one.  The number of coats will depend on the paint and colour you use.IMG_0576.jpeg
  3. When it is painted and dry it is time to add the polka dots.  I usually use white acrylic or a white tester pot of emulsion, what ever I have to hand.   I do a first line of dots, you’ll probably need to add more paint to the dotting tool every other dot.  I do mine about 1.5cm apart, however this changes depending on the size/look of the item.   IMG_0570
  4.  *TOP TIP* – (and here is where you think wow that is so easy!) The next line you just make sure the dots are in the middle of the dots on the previous line! It is that simple – you don’t have to be exact, just roughly in the middle.IMG_5620.JPG
  5. The 3rd line will then be inline with your first line, and then follow this pattern till its all pretty and polka’d!!!!

Now set about polka dotting everything! 🙂

My first blog post!…

So here we go, my first blog post.

I have read many articles about the importance of a first blog post, setting up the feel for the site and engaging the audience, (that’s you!) – so no pressure! I seem to spend a lot of time researching, some may call it procrastinating, and I have decided I am best just going for it.

I live in a little village in Wiltshire with my hubby, 2 gorgeous girls and a cheeky miniature schnauzer!

I love being creative, I always have. Back in school I made a rocking horse, and decided as I loved wood so much I would become a carpenter! After some ‘guidance’ I was told the money was in business, and as I happened to be a little bit good at that too that is the path I took!

After dipping my toe in the business world (because I wanted to be rich), I decided it was all a bit scary!  I am not very good at being assertive, and I don’t like wearing proper clothes every day!!!

So at 30 something I decided that I would follow my creative path.  I love making something and stepping back and thinking ‘I did that’.  It makes my soul happy.

Polka dots are an absolute favourite of mine (as you can see below!), I adore them, we have them on our walls, clothes, bags, even the dogs collar – and nearly everything I make ends up with them.

I am in the process of doing a post and a video showing you how easy polka dotting is, so you too can go polka crazy!

So that is it, the first post nervously completed! Phew! – watch this space for more posts.

Thank you so much for reading 🙂 Jo xx
