How to Polkadot

I think the question I get asked most is how I do my dots.  My answer is always the same – it is easier than you may think!

I have put together a little tutorial and a video to show you just how simple it is! Any questions please leave a comment below.

You will need:

  • Chalk paint (or emulsion) for the background
  • Acrylic paint (or emulsion) for the dots
  • Coarse and fine sandpaper
  • Flat paint brush – I use size 4
  • Dotting tool (or the end of a paint brush will do if you don’t have one)
  1. Start by painting the item you want to polka dot.  I have used chalk paint but I also use emulsion tester pots- you get a wider range of colours that way.Screenshot 2019-03-05 at 10.56.19.png
  2. I sand between each coat, first with a coarse sandpaper and then with a fine one.  The number of coats will depend on the paint and colour you use.IMG_0576.jpeg
  3. When it is painted and dry it is time to add the polka dots.  I usually use white acrylic or a white tester pot of emulsion, what ever I have to hand.   I do a first line of dots, you’ll probably need to add more paint to the dotting tool every other dot.  I do mine about 1.5cm apart, however this changes depending on the size/look of the item.   IMG_0570
  4.  *TOP TIP* – (and here is where you think wow that is so easy!) The next line you just make sure the dots are in the middle of the dots on the previous line! It is that simple – you don’t have to be exact, just roughly in the middle.IMG_5620.JPG
  5. The 3rd line will then be inline with your first line, and then follow this pattern till its all pretty and polka’d!!!!

Now set about polka dotting everything! 🙂
